We invite you to the exhibition “Check Mate”. Jerry Kowalsky representing the figurative artist fraction and Wolfgang Flad representing the abstract fraction, present 37 artist in a battle.
Battles or competitions are a continues habit in our society mostly seen with a negative touch. We are continuously confronted with negative battles and competitions mostly solely documented in the media. When people think of a battle or competition, they typically think of negative competition, which leads to hostility, negative attitudes, and a “winner-takes-all” mentality. However, contrary to popular belief, there are two types of competition: positive and negative.
We want the positive!
The positive form of competition is often referred to healthy, or cooperative competition. As the name suggests, positive competition promotes an “everyone wins” attitude where everyone work collectively toward a common goal and the reward is communal. In positive competition, the individual can also compete to improve their own, but in a cooperative manner in which there is mutual respect and pleasant interactions that do not jeopardize others. And important the fun factor!
The works of the two artist groups, figurative and abstract, meet each other in the space on opposite walls. The confrontation of the pictures provokes the other group and leaves the viewer to decide which group or artists he prefers depending on his individual impression. Additionally to support the fun factor the artists will have the opportunity to “influence” the result by playing chess against a opponent from the other group.
